ABOUT JANE & MARK

Jane and Mark are a team who met in 2000 and bought their first house together in 2003 in South West France. Soon after, they purchased a mews house in Marylebone, which they renovated together. During this process, they discovered a shared love of "playing house," complementary skills, and a hands on approach.

Since then, they have been working together, renovating properties as a "side hustle" in France, London, Rutland, and now Portugal.

Here’s a look at some of their projects.

NATURAL DESIGN APPROACH

Guided by a love of natural materials, spaces that allow energy to flow, and opportunities to grow their experience, they have kept moving every couple of years.

When they cannot find what they are looking for, they design it themselves or collaborate with others to bring their designs to life.

The process starts with sourcing the property. Buying well is essential. While most say "location, location, location," their mantra is "location, orientation, did they get the basics right?" The position, light, and proportions are essential, as there is only so much you can change with imagination.

Their signature style includes a considered use of natural materials, everything from plaster to paint to fabrics, and an eclectic mix of furniture, some of which has moved with them since they began. This includes the sofa featured on the cover of The White Company book, which is one of the first pieces of furniture Jane bought long before she met Mark.

THEIR PHILOSOPHY

Buy once, buy handcrafted, buy direct from the person who made it, buy what you love enough to look at every day, and buy classic pieces that will stand the test of time. What you buy will increase in value, be loved by others over time, and serve you well.

Do not be lured by interior fashions and trends or waste your money on mass produced goods. They are the interiors equivalent of fast fashion.

In 2019, they were approached by the Creative Director of The White Company to be featured in their book, The Art of Living with White.
